Discount Bunk Beds
It is always tempting to try and save money when you can, and why not. But, with a bed, you get what you pay for and you might not sleep as well on a cheaper bed than a more expensive one. This could result in back problems, or perhaps being behind schedule at work. Unless you are a college student, it is unlikely that you will be buying a bunk bed for yourself, more likely it will be your children. Now imagine the consequences of a bad back or tiredness for you child, and add safety too it. If you are a college student, you should be responsible enough to make your own decisions about how much you can afford to spend on a bunk bed, but it is advisable to spend as much as you think you can get away with. You might not feel the effects now, but maybe you will in forty years time.
As a parent, it is unlikely that you would ever wish to compromise the health and safety of your child. Whilst this article is not trying to imply that all discount bunk beds are dangerous or uncomfortable, there will be some models which are less suitable than others, and perhaps put your child at a greater risk. There are two things which you might need to consider before buying a bunk bed for a child, before even thinking about how much you are willing to spend:
- Is your child old/large enough to be safe to sleep on the upper bunk? It is recommended that children under the age of 6, or around 3ft 8” are not.
- re you able to prevent the child from playing on the upper bunk?
If the answer to these questions is yes, then a bunk bed is a fantastic piece of furniture, and will give you far more space in the room than before. It is recommended that you do not buy a second hand bunk bed; it may not be as safe as it seems when assembled for a second time and depending on its age, may not conform to current safety regulations. These were set by the CPSC in 2001 in order to cut down on the number of small children who suffered injuries whilst using bunk beds.
It is unlikely that you will be able to find a solid bunk bed for under $150 that matches these specifications and spending another $200 could be worthwhile in order for your child to be safe and comfortable with the bed. Metal bunk beds are often more competitively priced than wooden beds, and are less bulky too. Perhaps one good tip would be to buy a good quality bunk bed which can be separated into two twin beds. This means that if you have two children who are sharing a room, they can easily move into their own rooms when the time comes and in the long term, this could save you money without compromising too much quality.
Should you wish to buy a discount bunk bed, you might be better to look at local dealers. The internet is a good place to start for research, and it’s not impossible that you will find what you’re looking for at the price you want, but it’s more likely that a local company specializing in supplying landlords, for example, with furniture will be the cheapest option. If you are a landlord, or the owner of a hostel, you should make sure that the beds you buy conform to safety regulations as set by the CPSC. Look for the sticker on the bed to make sure of this. All beds sold in the US after June 2000 need to pass these tests. If you’re buying in bulk, you should be able to arrange a competitive price, in which case you should try to get as good a model as you can for the amount of money that you’re willing to spend.
