Bunk Bed Styles & Information on Bunk Beds
As well as paying for plans, there are several places on the internet where plans for bunk beds can be downloaded at no cost. However, many of these plans are not as thorough as the plans which are only available by paying, so you should make sure you are confident in what you are doing before choosing to build one. However, they are still interesting to look through, and can easily found through the search engines. One website in particular, Canadian Home Workshop seems to provide an exceptionally good plan at no cost, although there may be others too. This includes a walkthrough guide to making the bed, and a very clear diagram.
The equipment you need will probably include a table saw, circular saw, dado blade, drill press and a router/table. Needless to say that if you are not too confident with this type of equipment, you should not make a bunk bed which could potentially endanger your children’s life. Nor should you do it simply as a cost saving exercise – the bed must be right, secure and safe, and ideally it should be something that you enjoy making.
Of course, if you are a skilled woodworker, you might be able to create your own design for a bunk bed, but again it is important to be aware of the safety standards. This is recommended only for those with the confidence, skill and knowledge that are required to create a safe bunk bed.
Assuming you already own all the equipment, you should be able to build a basic bunk bed for around $100 dollars. This is a significant saving on commercial beds, but you should only make the bed if you are comfortable that it will be safe to sleep in.
